Had the mini tested for an MOT, it needs a new radius arm, amongst other smaller jobs. it’s going to cost me a few hundred pounds I didn’t want to spend in order to make it right.

Glad the Japanese “Shaken” or the French”contrôle technique “ are not as annoying as the MOT. That thing seems like a freaking pain in the arse :)

man, I was always under the impression that the Shaken was much stricter. It’s annoying, but at least it keeps anything unsafe off the road. I’m also happy that nothing it failed on was corrosion related

From what I know of the MOT, it's a lot worse... Wrote about the shaken before here:

That seems pretty close to an MOT, but I think you’re right; it’s definitely more relaxed in places, and there’s a few extra bits on an MOT that don’t seem to be tested in Japan

I failed mine two weeks ago. Nearside front cv boot perished, exhaust has “major” leak, emissions failed rear pads worn, and centre brake light not working.

I’m due a test next Friday and the garage told me it wouldn’t pass because rust. It’s reached the end of its life, they said. We’ll see.

Depends on how much you love the car. Was it the Mitsubishi Other?

Looks like a clean Mini compared to most I’ve seen.

Is that a couple of hundred paying someone else to do it?

If so, just get the parts and do it yourself :) minis are dead simple

The only issue I have with older Japanese cars is the quality of the steel. I hope you can get it fixed.

It’s paying a garage to do the work, yeah. And It’ll probably be more than just a couple of hundred, especially in my neck of the woods.

I probably could do the work myself, but it’s already booked in, plus, the tools I’ve got are limited, so I’ll pay extra to spare myself the hassle of trying to work in such a cramped engine bay

Thanks! As far as rust goes, it’s one of the most solid Minis I’ve seen outside of a museum, but the MOT test is pretty strict, and since most of the car is still original, old parts have to be replaced

Yeah i suppose. I'd still be tempted to do whatever i can myself to reduce the cost. I value my time a lot less than mechanics value theirs!
